Biography
Bruce Wilcox is an Associate Professor of Practice in the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Director of USC’s Master of Science in Analytics Program. His academic interests focus on analytics education, curriculum and program development, artificial intelligence, data and analytics systems, cloud analytics, and experiential learning.Dr. Wilcox is particularly interested in how analytics education should evolve as AI and other technologies reshape the analytics profession. His work emphasizes an engineering-oriented approach to analytics that integrates analytical modeling with data, technology, systems thinking, implementation, and organizational application. He is currently involved in initiatives addressing AI-enabled analytics education, Analytics Systems Engineering, Enterprise AI, industry-academic partnerships, and the development of authentic experiential-learning opportunities for graduate students. His teaching philosophy emphasizes preparing students to formulate and solve real-world problems, exercise analytical and professional judgment, communicate effectively, and understand how analytics and AI are implemented within organizations.
Before joining USC full-time, Dr. Wilcox spent more than three decades in analytics, technology, and consulting, working with large corporate and government organizations. From 2013 to 2021, he worked for SAS Institute, where he advised major government clients in California on the application of advanced analytics technologies and solutions. His extensive industry experience strongly informs his emphasis on practical application, organizational context, and preparing students for professional analytics careers.
Dr. Wilcox earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, an MBA from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Claremont Graduate University. His doctoral research focused on time-series clustering for fixed-income portfolio diversification.
